Tritec replacement kits: Innovative lighting technology for traditional luminaires

Project

Upgrading the city centre’s street lighting

Moss, Norway

In southern Norway, around 60 kilometres south of Oslo, the municipality of Moss is located on the shores of the Oslofjord. As part of a comprehensive phase of urban development – including the construction of a new railway line and the redevelopment of several inner-city areas – the municipality of Moss decided in 2020 to convert all street lighting to LED technology.

The Norwegian architecture practice Zenisk developed the lighting concept for Moss city centre. In order to promote a more sustainable approach, the planners, together with SML Lighting, arrived at a solution that focused on retaining and upgrading the existing luminaires. All existing Noral luminaires were fitted with a new light source: Tritec replacement kits, which create a relaxed atmosphere with warm light.

In Moss, the light output in the respective streets was set to 15 per cent of the maximum output. This not only ensures an optimal level of illumination but also contributes to the long lifespan of the replacement kits. Depending on requirements, the lighting level can be flexibly adjusted and regulated via remote control. With warm-white LEDs and optional gold-coloured reflectors, Tritec is available in colour temperatures of 2200, 2700 or 3000 Kelvin.

Background

The Tritec replacement kits provide a cost-effective and sustainable way of bringing existing post-top and pendant luminaires up to the latest LED technology, while preserving their historic character and the ambience of their surroundings.

By preserving both the luminaires and the poles, a beautiful aspect of the city that significantly contributes to its identity was maintained. At the same time, valuable material resources were conserved. The modernisation of street lighting in Moss city centre was awarded the Norwegian Lighting Award in the Sustainability category in 2023.
