A new lighting scheme for Bauers Brygga
Jönköping, Sweden
Jönköping, an historic residential and industrial city in Sweden’s southern province of Småland, is situated on the country’s second-largest lake, Vättern. Through its harbor canal, the city connects to the lagoon lake Munksjön, over which Bauers Brygga extends. The public spaces around the northern part of Munksjön were developed around 2010 and were later awarded the Jönköping City Building Prize. Today, the area is illuminated with the Aira Cylinder.
Once a bustling industrial district, Bauers Brygga has been transformed into a vibrant waterfront destination along Munksjön, inviting visitors to stroll, relax, and enjoy the surroundings.
The overall design concept creates a sequence of distinct spaces, each with its own character and function, together forming a varied and engaging walk around the lake. While the western shore is designed with a park-like atmosphere, the eastern side retains a more urban identity.
Benefiting from its southern orientation, Bauers Brygga has quickly become one of Jönköping’s most popular public destinations. Cafés and restaurants line the traffic-free waterfront promenade, complemented by generous wooden seating steps and piers that provide ideal spots for relaxation and sunbathing.

To ensure a pleasant atmosphere for visitors even during the evening hours, the lighting at Bauers Brygga has been upgraded with Aira Cylinder luminaires. The existing poles were reused, allowing for a straightforward replacement of the lighting heads. The golden reflectors of the Aira Cylinders emit a warm 2700 Kelvin light that complements the surrounding cafés and restaurants. This gentle illumination enhances the waterfront’s ambiance, making it feel more vibrant and inviting. In doing so, the new lighting enriches the public realm and contributes to a more attractive living environment for both residents and visitors of Jönköping.
