Sustainablity & motivation

Why retrofit to LED instead of replacing luminaires?

Retrofitting existing luminaires with LED technology is a more sustainable and often more cost effective alternative to full replacement. Characteristic luminaires are retained and upgraded to current technology. This approach conserves resources, reduces CO₂ emissions, and preserves the identity of public spaces.
Retrofitting also enables the targeted use of modern lighting technology. Precise optics reduce light spill and light pollution. Warmer color temperatures support nocturnal wildlife and help protect natural rhythms.
In many cases, retrofitting requires less time than full replacement and significantly reduces material use and costs.

Why is retrofitting more sustainable than new installation?

Upgrading existing luminaires reuses existing components such as high quality stainless steel or cast housings. This reduces material demand, lowers emissions from manufacturing and transport, and minimizes unnecessary waste compared to new installations.

Energy savings

How high is the energy savings potential?

Energy savings depend on the specific starting conditions and project goals. Key factors include the type of light sources installed, operating hours, and priorities such as maximum savings or visual comfort. A reliable assessment therefore requires a project specific analysis.

To illustrate the potential, we can refer to a practical example from Stockholm, where energy savings were calculated as follows:

As shown, conventional luminaires with an average of 60W per luminaire were used. These included compact fluorescent lamps at 42W and metal halide lamps at 70W. After retrofitting with Selux Tritec modules, energy consumption was reduced by approximately 58 percent. Additional night time dimming between 23:00 and 05:00 reduced total annual electricity consumption by around 20 percent. The project did not prioritize maximum energy savings. Instead, it focused on a balanced relationship between visual comfort, atmosphere, and efficiency.

Are Selux modernization solutions eligible for funding?

Yes. Selux solutions can meet the requirements of government funding programs such as the National Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. They qualify as professional system retrofits.

Selux retrofit kits differ from standard retrofits that are not eligible for funding. They significantly improve energy efficiency and meet technical requirements for light quality and controllability.

Product overview

For which luminaires does Selux offer retrofit kits?

Selux offers LED retrofit kits for both its own luminaires and those of other manufacturers. The appropriate solution depends on the specific luminaire model.

1) Tritec replacement modules

Tritec technology is a modular system for (decorative) luminaires up to 5 meters in height. It is available in two variants:

›Tritec Sky‹ provides precise light control without stray light. It helps protect natural environments and the night sky.

›Tritec Ambiance‹ creates a bright and airy atmosphere. It increases vertical illumination and produces soft transitions with illuminated façades. It is well suited for city centers, historic streets, and lively public spaces.

Both variants are available in different light colors and reflector finishes. They are also cost effective for smaller quantities.

2) Gen5 module

The Gen5 module is a high performance retrofit solution for large scale pendant luminaires. It delivers luminous flux of up to 15,000 lumens. The lenses are made of optical silicone, which ensures high durability and excellent light transmission. This makes the module suitable for long term outdoor use.

3) Flex Kits with free form lens optics

These modules are designed for technical luminaires and road lighting. They can be individually adapted to existing housings and have been used, for example, in the historic district of Salzburg.

What colour temperatures are available?

Tritec and Flex Kits are available in colour temperatures from 2,200K to 4,000K. The Gen5 module is available from 2,700K to 4,000K.

What light distributions are available?

Depending on the retrofit kit, Selux offers a range of symmetric and asymmetric light distributions, including Tritec options such as “asymmetric street” and “asymmetric street with sidewalk.” These distributions minimize light spill and actively reduce light pollution while ensuring compliance with the required lighting classes defined in DIN EN 13201.

Are LDT files available for the retrofit kits?

Yes. LDT files are available for all retrofit solutions.

Project implementation & service

How does a project with Selux work?

Each project begins with detailed planning. Selux works with the client to analyze the existing installation and evaluate luminaire types. Based on this analysis, a tailored modernization concept is developed. Technical and design requirements are considered together to achieve a balance between energy efficiency, visual comfort, and atmosphere.

Can Selux develop custom retrofit kits?

Yes. Based on a sample luminaire, Selux can develop tailored retrofit kits that match the existing installation. Minimum order quantities are defined on a case by case basis.

Can mounting systems be adapted to specific housings?

Yes. Mounting solutions can be adapted to suit specific luminaire designs. Minimum order quantities are defined individually.

Enviroment & biodiversity

Do retrofit kits offer benefits beyond energy efficiency?

LED retrofitting offers more than energy savings. The use of precise optics such as ›Tritec Sky‹ reduces light pollution and limits the impact on natural environments and the night sky. Warm colour temperatures such as 2,200 K or 2,700 K are less disruptive to birds and insects than cool white light. As an optional feature, ›Circular Light Profiles‹ allow dynamic adjustment of light spectrum and intensity. This supports the needs of both people and nature.

What are Circular Light Profiles?

›Circular Light Profiles‹ developed by Selux are based on scientific principles. They adjust the light spectrum according to time of day and season. The blue light component is reduced in a targeted way. This reduces disturbance to insects and birds compared to conventional lighting while maintaining safety and visibility.

Smart lighting & controls

Can existing luminaires be integrated into a smart city system through retrofitting?

Yes. With an optional Zhaga interface, retrofitted luminaires can be connected and integrated into lighting management systems. This enables precise control, flexible dimming, efficient asset management, and simplified maintenance.

Can existing LED luminaires be upgraded to smart systems later?

Yes. Luminaires that have already been converted to LED can be retrofitted with a Selux retrofit kit equipped with a Zhaga interface. This allows them to be integrated into a lighting management system.

Are the retrofit kits compatible with third party control systems?

Yes. Selux retrofit kits can be equipped with the Zhaga hardware standard. This allows integration with common lighting management systems such as DALI, Dyna, or HNS. Cities and municipalities remain independent of specific manufacturers and are well prepared for future requirements.

Installation & maintenance

What is the installation effort per luminaire?

Selux retrofit kits are designed for efficient installation. In many cases, full installation can be completed within minutes as part of routine maintenance. This is made possible by mechanical interfaces that are precisely matched to the existing luminaires.

Are the retrofit kits plug and play?

No. Professional installation is required.

Is surge protection up to 10 kV possible?

Yes.

Are different power levels available?

Yes. Retrofit kits are available in a range of power levels.

What IP rating applies?

The retrofit kits do not have their own IP rating. The applicable rating is defined by the existing luminaire housing.

Warranty & compliance

What warranty conditions apply?

Selux retrofit kits come with a one-year warranty. With project registration, we extend this to up to five years.

What happens if the luminaire housing is not sealed?

Damage caused by leaking or damaged housings is not covered by the retrofit kit warranty and must be addressed separately.

Does the CE marking remain valid after retrofitting?

Yes. Selux retrofit kits are independently tested and certified products. Unlike simple lamp retrofits, where the installer may assume the role of the manufacturer, technical responsibility remains with Selux. We recommend verifying CE conformity on a case by case basis.
