Hudson River Park – a natural, peaceful retreat amidst the bustling metropolis
Project
Redesign of the
Gansevoort Peninsula Waterfront
New York, USA
In January 2019, the Hudson River Park Trust commissioned a design team led by James Corner Field Operations to create a new park on the Gansevoort Peninsula. From the outset, the public was actively involved in planning Manhattan’s first public beach along the Hudson River, contributing ideas and feedback for how the expansive space should be used. After roughly a year of design and conceptual development, the project received approval in January 2020, paving the way for construction, which was completed in 2023.
This 5.5-acre area, part of Hudson River Park, offers unparalleled access for kayakers and non-motorized boats. With 1,200 tons of sand, umbrellas, and chairs, the beach is just the beginning of what it offers.
It also includes a sports field, sunbathing lawn, dog runs, picnic areas, and fitness equipment. Located in the vibrant Meatpacking District near the Whitney Museum, the peninsula provides stunning views of Lower Manhattan.
Gansevoort Peninsula also features an ecological salt marsh, providing educational opportunities about local ecosystems. A significant environmental initiative includes introducing 20 million juvenile oysters into the waters to improve water quality and foster a more resilient ecosystem. This project exemplifies how public spaces can enhance a community's quality of life, making it an inviting destination for both locals and tourists.
The newly redesigned waterfront area of the Gansevoort Peninsula offers visitors a wide range of activities and a high-quality experience. Contributing to this is the park’s new lighting system, featuring Selux Lanova Catenary and Olivio Sistema luminaires:
Lanova catenary luminaires illuminate the picnic area, creating a welcoming atmosphere for outdoor dining. Positioned precisely where light is needed – whether as a bright focal point or to cast dramatic shadows – they enhance both function and ambiance.
Olivio Sistema luminaires elegantly line the boardwalk, providing increased safety and comfort for evening strolls. Their organic design integrates seamlessly into the new green oasis that has emerged within the urban environment.
The collaboration between New York City and the state has significantly enhanced the Hudson Shore experience, making Gansevoort Peninsula a prime spot for families and friends to gather and enjoy Manhattan's first-ever public beachfront.
