Tritec illuminates the old gasworks with an interplay of various luminaire families

Project

Tradition and creativity, all in one

Augsburg, Germany

The former gasworks in the Augsburg district of Oberhausen is a unique industrial monument in Europe with immense potential. The 70,000 square metre site, located just 3.8 kilometres from the centre of Augsburg, offers plenty of space for creative expression. The dynamic Oberhausen district, near the new Augsburg University Hospital, also adds to the appeal of the area.

In recent years, the gasworks site has been undergoing an impressive transformation. The complex has been gradually developed since 2017 by the Stadtwerke Augsburg in cooperation with the City of Augsburg. The over 100-year-old, largely preserved campus is being converted into a unique area for culture and the creative industries, as well as for the theatre, art, and music scene of the region.

As a lighting solution for the old gas works, the lighting designers chose the Tritec optics, which were used as a continuous design element across various types of luminaires. In three construction phases, Elo light columns and bollards, Aira pendant and wall lights, and Lif light columns were installed.

These luminaires not only create different moods and provide the right atmosphere for each use, but also unify the space, as the luminaires harmonise well together as the integrated Tritec optics create a visual connection between all the luminaire families.

Tritec accenentuates a space by enhancing individual details such as shapes, colours, and textures, all while providing a warm light that creates a comfortable environment. At the same time, the low colour temperature of the light helps to protect wildlife.

Special features of the lighting include the replicas of gas mantles in the luminaires to evoke the connection to the site's original use, and the perfect integration of the luminaires into the overall ensemble. Dynamic projections through modern gobo projectors serve as signposts and effect lighting, while façade modules highlight the majestic gate arches of the heart chamber. In the event area, the safety lighting was connected to the columns according to the VStättV (Assembly Places Ordinance).

The Stadtwerke Augsburg and the Kreativwerk have created a unique space here. The industrial buildings, the theatre in the oven house, and various dining options make this location a cultural oasis in the heart of Augsburg.
