Tallinn's new landmark: The newly opened cruise terminal focuses on sustainability

Project

Cruise Terminal

Tallinn, Estonia

At 430,000 inhabitants, Estland’s capital Tallinn is not only the largest city in the country but also its economical and cultural centre. Connections to Helsinki, Stockholm and Saint Petersburg combined with more than ten million passengers annually make Tallinn an important port for Baltic sea ferries. In 2021 a new, sustainable terminal was opened at the port with a direct connection to new tourist locations.

The previously inaccessible old port of Tallinn now welcomes guests with a new, ultramodern cruise ship terminal that has been designed by SALTO arhitektuuribüroo OÜ. Energy requirements at the terminal are catered for by solar collectors, which have been adapted to the Nordic climate. The system is additionally heated by water power using a thermal pump, enabling events, concerts and conferences to be staged outside of the cruise ship season.

The 850 metre-long promenade connects the cruise ship guests arriving at the terminal with the city’s “cultural kilometre" – a direct path between the port area and numerous new leisure areas. A roof promenade that leads over the projecting roofing of the cruise ship terminal is a special attraction for visitors. A playground, an outdoor fitness studio and a restaurant with spacious terraces, seating facilities and a picturesque view of the sea ensure a bustling atmosphere in the newly designed urban area.

For the lighting of the terminal, the light planner bureau Sweco has chosen Olivio luminaires with kinked poles. Using the highly expressive Olivio Sistema design line, the luminaires can be arranged on various levels as required around the pole leading to a spacious design area. In the evening, Olivio immerses the urban surroundings in a warm, natural light that leaves a special impression on passengers arriving via sea as well as locals and other visitors.
