Lombardsbrücke — team licht’s redesign under heritage protection
Hamburg, Germany
A Hamburg heritage landmark returns in a new light. The refurbished Lombardsbrücke combines historic candelabra with contemporary LED technology — discreetly retrofitted using Tritec replacement kits. With Circular Light Profile Biological White, lighting designers can subtly counterbalance colour shifts in natural stone as it weathers, while precise optics help reduce spill light.
The Lombardsbrücke connects Hamburg’s Binnenalster and Außenalster in the city centre and is one of the city’s most recognisable pieces of infrastructure. As part of an extensive refurbishment, a new lighting concept was developed to combine heritage accuracy with modern lighting technology.
The design approach follows a clear hierarchy. The historic candelabra maintain the bridge’s traditional silhouette after dark, while carefully positioned LED light lines and spotlights add a second layer — giving the sandstone and the characteristic balusters depth and rhythm.

Background
Tritec replacement kits, paired with a bespoke Circular Light Profile in Biological White, allow lighting designers to subtly counterbalance colour shifts in natural stone as it weathers.

Selux contributed to the project with a discreet retrofit solution: Tritec Ambiance replacement kits modernise the historic luminaires while preserving their outward appearance. Combined with a bespoke Circular Light Profile in Biological White, the upgrade enables subtle balancing of colour shifts in natural stone as it weathers. The result is improved visual comfort and a refined night-time presence — with reduced spill light and a clear focus on protecting the night sky.
