Line illuminates the newly created
Library Square
Project

Württembergische Landesbibliothek Stuttgart –
Grand Staircase and Library Square with the Fitz-Faller Fountain
Stuttgart, Germany
The new extension of the Württemberg State Library (WLB) in Stuttgart is an architecturally and urbanistically significant project. Not only does it expand the functionality of the library, but it also reshapes the surrounding public realm: a contemporary urban space has been created along Stuttgart’s Cultural Mile. By incorporating the Fitz-Faller Fountain, the square maintains its connection to the adjacent Schlossgarten while inviting residents and visitors alike to pause and enjoy the space.
Line light columns illuminate both the Library Square and the broad grand staircase during the evening hours.
With their clear, minimalist design, the slender luminaires integrate harmoniously into their surroundings and, in combination with the illuminated Fitz-Faller Fountain, create a distinctive nighttime appearance.
Two complementary lighting concepts contribute to the illumination of this new public space. On the one hand, the illuminated water walls of the fountain create a striking visual feature, complemented by smaller lighting accents within the fountain walls and illuminated handrails along the staircases. This concept was primarily developed by the landscape architecture practice of Helmut Hornstein in Überlingen.

On the other hand, the square itself and the grand staircase are illuminated through the public lighting scheme. The Line light columns echo the architectural axes of the library building, while the carefully selected light distribution ensures that only a small number of luminaires are required to provide pleasant, safe and uniform illumination across the entire square and staircase. The State of Baden-Württemberg has opted for an environmentally responsible and innovative lighting solution, employing appropriate light colours, precise beam angles and intelligent lighting management. All luminaires installed on the library square via the new Selux Smart Services feature Zhaga-compliant interfaces and eSave control. The lighting can be adjusted remotely according to the time of day and level of use, helping to conserve resources while maintaining a high-quality nighttime environment.
