Redesigning the city´s main square

Stora Torg

Eslöv, Sweden

The origins and development of the small town of Eslöv in the south-western province of Skåne can be traced back to the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century. Very soon there were several banks, hotels, schools, traders and craftsmen in the town. Today, Eslöv has around 22,000 inhabitants.

The heart of the town and main square, the Stora Torg, is one of the most important public spaces in Eslöv. In autumn 2017, the landscape architects from Sydväst arkitektur & landskap won a tender issued by Eslöv municipality to redesign the town centre. Covering an area of 115 by 65 metres, the Stora Torg is a large municipal open space for a small town such as Eslöv. The goal of the planning concept was to enhance the attractiveness of the square by the versatility of its functions. In this way, using design means like height differences, vegetation and floor coverings, smaller islands and levels were created for various activities.

A bright floor tiled with marble interconnects these areas and is subdivided into large areas that are laid using different patterns. The special floor design is also taken up by the design of the lighting in the square. For this, 24 Olivio Grande Gobo luminaires have been used attached to 12-metre high poles. The projectors, which cast an interactive pattern on the ground emphasise the design of the square. Together with the newly created seating areas, staircases and trees, the projectors entice passers-by to while away some time in Eslöv town centre.
