The new Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Located at West 55th Street and 9th Avenue in New York City, the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater is the largest facility devoted solely to dance in the United States. The contemporary eight-story facility boasts 12 dance studios and a special Black Box Theater with seating for up to 285 guests. It was in the Black Box Theater that the lighting designer wished to make a departure from the usual lighting solutions – and Selux met the challenge.

“Michael Mehl wanted to create a false ceiling to mask the usual clutter seen in the canopy of the theater,” describes Veit Mueller of Selux . “He wanted fixture ‘presence’ as well as performance, so we custom-fabricated a fixture to lend itself to the unique architectural space.”

The Selux solution not only camouflages the set equipment and wiring, it also bathes the theater with ambient light for all to enjoy.
